Is a letter a good gift?

It works best when the point of the gift is the relationship rather than the object - a milestone birthday, an anniversary, an apology, someone far away, or a person who already owns everything. A letter is the one common gift that cannot have been given to anyone else, because it is made entirely of specifics only the sender has, and it is the kind of thing people keep for years in a drawer. It is a poor choice if the person has asked for something specific, or if you barely know them.

To a school teacher

You probably don't remember the day you told me my writing was worth something - but I've never forgotten it. That one sentence set the course of my life. Thank you, ma'am. Everything I've built started in your classroom.

To a mentor

Sir, you taught the subject, but what stuck was how you believed in students nobody else did. I was one of them. I'm doing well now - and a big part of that is you. Happy Teacher's Day.

Years later

You probably don't remember the day you told me I could, but I've carried it ever since. So much of who I became started in your classroom. Thank you for seeing more in me than I could see in myself.
