How should I address a letter to a hostel or boarding school?
Use the student's full name, class or room number if known, hostel name, and the school or college's full address — many schools route student mail via the warden or school office, so 'C/O The Warden' is a safe addition. Include a phone number for the courier in case the gate needs a call.
Will the school let the letter reach them?
Yes — schools and hostels handle student post routinely; letters are distributed at mail call or via the warden. Personal letters from family are welcomed almost everywhere (and often encouraged over phone time).
What happens if my child is in class when the letter is delivered?
Post to a hostel or PG almost never needs the student to be present — it's received at the gate, office or warden's desk and handed over at mail call. That's why post suits hostels better than a courier that needs a signature from the student.
How do I send a letter to a student staying in a PG or private hostel?
Use their full name, room number if they know it, the PG or hostel name, and the full street address with PIN code. Adding the student's mobile number helps — most PG landlords or caretakers accept post on behalf of residents.
What should I write to a homesick first-year student?
Don't try to fix the homesickness — name it kindly and then hand them home in detail: the dog, the street, dinner last night, a small piece of gossip. And say plainly that missing home means they had a good one. Keep it light at the end.
How often should I write to my child at boarding school?
Once or twice a month is plenty and easy to sustain — predictable letters are what make mail call something to look forward to. Around exams or the first term away, a short extra note lands especially well.
