On Flag Day, Money Is Asked For. Words Are Not.
Every 7 December the country is asked for a donation, and in exchange you get a small flag or a sticker for the windscreen. It is a good transaction and worth making. But it is the only thing the day asks of anybody, it is over in under a minute, and nobody at the other end ever learns who gave or why. A letter is the half a donation cannot do.

Why send a letter
The day is about the families too
Flag Day funds go to serving personnel, veterans, war widows and dependants. Almost every letter written to the forces goes to a serving jawan - a veteran's household or a veer nari receives practically none.
Give and write, not one or the other
The sticker on your windscreen records that you paid. A letter records that you thought about it. They cost different things, and only one of them gets read twice.
An uncrowded week
Flag Day has no sale attached to it and very little noise around it. Anything that arrives that week arrives into quiet, which is the opposite of how Republic Day or Diwali post lands.

Respected Sir, I bought the flag this morning, the way I do every year, and it struck me that you will never know a single thing about the people who did. So: I am a schoolteacher in Pune, I am forty-one, and my mornings are quiet because yours are not. That is the whole letter. Thank you.
Respected Madam, I know Flag Day is spoken of as a day for soldiers, and far less often as a day for the families who carried the rest of it. Your household gave something that does not get a medal or a parade. I wanted at least one stranger to say that out loud, in writing.
Respected Jawan bhai, there are nineteen of us in this office and we collected for Flag Day as we do every year. This time we decided the cheque was not enough on its own. Each of us has written separately. This one is from the fellow who sits nearest the window and thinks of you more often than he admits.

What is Armed Forces Flag Day and when is it?
It falls on 7 December and has been observed since 1949. Funds collected go towards the welfare and rehabilitation of serving personnel, ex-servicemen, war widows and their dependants. The small flags and car stickers handed out are given in exchange for a contribution.
Is sending a letter a substitute for donating?
No, and we would rather say so plainly. The day exists to raise money and a letter raises none. Donate through your Zila Sainik Board or the official Flag Day fund, and send the letter as well. The two do different jobs.
Who can I write to on Flag Day?
A serving soldier, a veteran, or a veteran's family. Most people write through a Zila Sainik Board, a regimental association, a welfare cell or an organised campaign that supplies the address. We post to whatever address you give us; we do not hold or supply addresses ourselves.
Can you deliver to a 56 APO or 99 APO address?
Yes. We post via India Post, which interfaces with the Army Postal Service for APO mail. Give us the exact unit address in the C/O 56 APO or C/O 99 APO format, precisely as the soldier has shared it, and the letter travels through the APS network to his unit.
When should I order so my letter is there for 7 December?
Scheduled delivery lets you choose the day we POST it, and the likely arrival window is shown beside it. For standard delivery, order about a week ahead - and for a forward posting allow generous margin, since mail to those areas moves less predictably than to a peace station.
What should a Flag Day letter say?
Resist the urge to write about the nation. Write about your ordinary week and what it rests on, name yourself properly, and keep it to a page. If you donated, you can say so in one line without making the letter about that.
Can I write it in Hindi?
Yes - Hindi, English or Hinglish. Hindi is the language most of these letters are read in, and for a letter to a veteran's household it is very often the warmer choice.
Can an office or a school send a batch for Flag Day?
Yes. Each letter is priced individually - 699 handwritten, 499 printed, on 100gsm cream paper - and each person's own words go on their own sheet. Send us the number of letters and the address you have been given and we will organise the batch.
What if I'm not good with words?
Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape your thoughts. You approve every word before it ships.
Can I add photos or extras?
You can attach up to 10 printed photos (50 each), add a wax seal or scented paper at checkout - every letter is on 100gsm premium cream paper.
I'm outside India - can I order and pay?
Yes. Order and pay online from anywhere in the world - international cards are accepted. The letter is written and posted within India, so there's no international postage or customs wait.
