🪖 Armed Forces · To a Father

He Has Missed Things. Tell Him You Noticed.

Children of soldiers grow up explaining where their father is. He missed the result day, the prize-giving, the match, the small Tuesday evening when something good happened and you wanted to tell someone. Most families handle that by not mentioning it. A letter is the one place you are allowed to say it plainly, and say in the same breath that you are proud rather than wounded.

Why send a letter

A child's letter outranks everything

Letters from home get read more than once, and a letter from his own child gets read until the paper gives out. Officers will tell you which letters stay in a man's breast pocket.

You can name the absences

A phone call has to stay cheerful because he has to go back to work in ten minutes. A letter can say 'you were not at my result day and I minded' without it becoming an argument, because he reads it alone.

He will not tell you he kept it

Fathers from the forces are not, as a rule, demonstrative about this. He will mention that the letter arrived. He will not mention that it is still in his locker two postings later.

From a young child
Dear Papa, I came second in the race and I looked at the gate anyway. Mumma says you would have shouted the loudest. I am keeping the medal on your side of the almirah so it is the first thing you see. Come home soon. I have grown, you will see.
From a grown son or daughter
Dear Papa, I used to think you had chosen the regiment over us. I am older now, and running a house of my own, and I have understood that you were holding up two things at once and never once complained about the weight of either. I should have said this years ago. I am saying it now.
On a day he is missing
Dear Papa, the wedding is on the fourteenth and you will be at the post. I am not writing to make you feel worse about that - I am writing so you know exactly what you will be missing and exactly how little anyone blames you for it. Your chair will be there. We will photograph it empty, and you will laugh.

Questions, answered

More answers on the FAQ page.

How do I send a handwritten letter to my father in the army?

Type or dictate what you want to say, pick handwritten (699) or printed (499), and give us his unit address exactly as he has shared it. We write it out on 100gsm cream paper and post it, APO addresses included.

Can you deliver to a 56 APO or 99 APO address?

Yes. We post via India Post, which interfaces with the Army Postal Service for APO mail. Give us the exact unit address in the C/O 56 APO or C/O 99 APO format, precisely as the soldier has shared it, and the letter travels through the APS network to his unit.

My father is posted somewhere remote. Will it reach?

Mail to forward areas travels through the Army Postal Service and moves less predictably than mail to a peace station, so allow generous margin. It gets there; it simply keeps its own schedule. Give us the exact unit address in the format he provided.

What should a child write to a father in the army?

Ordinary things, in detail. What happened at school, who said what, what the dog did. Soldiers do not want a letter about the nation from their own child; they want the texture of the week they are missing. One specific Tuesday beats a page of how much you miss him.

My child is too young to write a whole letter. Can we still send one?

Yes, and these are often the best ones. Send us the child's words as they said them, mistakes kept in, and we write them out as given. You can also enclose a photograph of a drawing rather than the drawing itself.

Can I write it in Hindi?

Yes - Hindi, English or Hinglish. Most letters in this direction are written in Hindi or in the mix families actually speak at home, and that is usually the right call.

When should I order so it reaches him around a particular day?

Scheduled delivery lets you choose the day we POST it, and the likely arrival window is shown beside it. For standard delivery, order about a week ahead, and more for a forward posting.

Can I send a photo of the family with the letter?

Yes - up to 10 printed photos (50 each), square 3x3 inches or 2.3x3.5 inches. A current family photograph is the single most requested thing in letters going to a posting.

What if I'm not good with words?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape your thoughts. You approve every word before it ships.

I'm outside India - can I order and pay?

Yes. Order and pay online from anywhere in the world - international cards are accepted. The letter is written and posted within India, so there's no international postage or customs wait.
