🤝 Raksha Bandhan · Chosen family

Some Brothers Are Chosen, and the Thread Still Applies

Plenty of people tie a rakhi to someone with no blood relation at all: the friend who turned up during the worst year, the neighbour who has been in the house since childhood, the colleague who quietly became family. Sometimes there's no brother; sometimes there's one who was never much of one. The thread doesn't check paperwork. A letter is where you explain the promotion — and this is one relationship where nobody has ever said any of it out loud.

Rakhi Letter to a Friend Who Is Like a Brother letter by post

Why send a letter

Chosen, not assigned

A family brother is an accident of birth. This one was selected on evidence — which is, if anything, the better compliment.

It has never been said

Blood siblings get called siblings constantly. A chosen brother is rarely told outright where he stands. The letter does that.

The thread makes it official

Rakhi turns an unspoken arrangement into a stated one — and a letter is the only part of the day that can carry the words.

The promotion
I'm tying you a rakhi this year, which I appreciate you didn't apply for. You've done every single thing an older brother is supposed to do — turned up, told me unwelcome truths, and handled things I couldn't — for eight years, without the title. Consider this the paperwork catching up with reality.
When there is no brother
Growing up, Rakhi was the one festival I sat out, because there was nobody to tie a thread to. There is now. You didn't ask for the role and you've been doing it unpaid for years. I wanted that written down, on paper, in the way it's usually only written for family.
To a neighbour of many years
You've lived four doors down since I was seven and have been in every important room of my life since. The families are separate on the census and nowhere else. Happy Rakhi — the thread is a formality at this point, but formalities matter.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is it acceptable to tie a rakhi to a friend?

It's common, and it always has been. Raksha Bandhan is a promise of protection between two people, not a check on family records — rakhis get tied to friends, neighbours, colleagues, and soldiers nobody has ever met.

How do I write this without it being misread?

Be explicit and early: name the relationship as brotherly in the first two lines, then keep the whole letter in that register. Concrete instances of what he's done work better than feelings here — they make the nature of it unmistakable.

I want to send a rakhi to a soldier instead — can you help?

Yes, and there's a page for exactly that. Rakhi letters to serving soldiers are one of the most common requests we get around the festival, and they're written differently from a letter to someone you know.

Can you send the rakhi thread itself along with the letter?

No — we produce and post letters, not parcels, so the rakhi thread travels separately. Most people send the rakhi by courier and the letter through us, timed to land in the same few days. The two arriving separately actually works in your favour: the thread is the ritual, the letter is the part nobody expects.

Should I choose printed or handwritten?

Printed is your words set in a warm type on 100gsm cream paper. Handwritten is a real person writing it out by hand, in ink, on the same paper. For Rakhi — a festival that is entirely about a physical object — handwritten is the one people keep in the cupboard with the old rakhis.

Will my letter reach before Raksha Bandhan?

We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post — typically 3–6 days anywhere in India. Order about a week before Rakhi to be comfortable. Post volumes climb in the fortnight before the festival, so earlier is genuinely better for this one.

I don't know how to write to my own sibling. Can you help?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before it's written out and posted — nothing goes in the envelope that doesn't sound like you.

Will anyone else read it?

No. Your letter is produced confidentially, sealed, and addressed only to your sibling. The envelope is elegant and unbranded on the front, which matters in a joint family house where the post gets collected by whoever's nearest.
