🌙 Raksha Bandhan · Apart

Someone Ties the Thread. You're Just Not There for It.

There are years when it simply doesn't work out — a posting, a hospital, an exam, a job that doesn't do festival leave, a fallout in the family that hasn't healed enough for a visit. The day arrives anyway, slightly hollow, with everyone being brisk about it on the phone. A letter can't fix the absence. What it can do is make sure something of you is physically in that room on the day, which is more than a call manages.

Rakhi Letter When You Can't Meet letter by post

Why send a letter

Something of you in the room

A call is over in ten minutes. A letter sits on the table through the whole day and stays afterwards.

Say what the call won't hold

Festival calls are crowded and brisk. The real sentence never survives them. On paper it does.

It doesn't need a good moment

No time zone, no free slot, nobody's doorbell interrupting. They read it when they're ready to.

Straightforward
I'm not going to be there and there's no version of this year where I could have been. So this is the stand-in: something with my handwriting on it, on the table, on the day. Tie the thread, eat my share, and send me the photo. I'll settle up in person at the next available opportunity.
Hard year
This one's landing in the middle of a bad stretch for both of us and I don't want to pretend otherwise with festival language. Here's what's true: the arrangement holds. Whatever this year turns into, you have a call you can make at any hour and someone who will answer it. That's the whole promise, and it doesn't require me to be in the room.
Brief
Missing it again. Third year, and I've stopped saying 'next year definitely'. What hasn't changed: I think about that house on this day every single year, at roughly the time the thali comes out. Happy Rakhi.

Questions, answered

What do I write when I can't be there for Rakhi?

Don't over-apologise — one line for the absence is enough. Spend the letter on what hasn't changed and one concrete thing you'll do (the visit, the call, the plan). A letter that dwells on the missing makes the day heavier; one that states the promise makes it lighter.

Can I schedule the letter to be sent later?

Yes — you can choose a future send date up to six months out, so you can write it now and have it produced and posted closer to the festival. Useful if you know your week before Rakhi is going to be impossible.

We're not on good terms this year. Is a letter the right move?

Often, yes — it's the least demanding form of contact there is. It doesn't put anyone on the spot, doesn't require a reply, and can be read privately. If the rift is serious, keep it short, claim no ground, and let the fact of the letter do the work.

Can you send the rakhi thread itself along with the letter?

No — we produce and post letters, not parcels, so the rakhi thread travels separately. Most people send the rakhi by courier and the letter through us, timed to land in the same few days. The two arriving separately actually works in your favour: the thread is the ritual, the letter is the part nobody expects.

Should I choose printed or handwritten?

Printed is your words set in a warm type on 100gsm cream paper. Handwritten is a real person writing it out by hand, in ink, on the same paper. For Rakhi — a festival that is entirely about a physical object — handwritten is the one people keep in the cupboard with the old rakhis.

Will my letter reach before Raksha Bandhan?

We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post — typically 3–6 days anywhere in India. Order about a week before Rakhi to be comfortable. Post volumes climb in the fortnight before the festival, so earlier is genuinely better for this one.

I don't know how to write to my own sibling. Can you help?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before it's written out and posted — nothing goes in the envelope that doesn't sound like you.

Will anyone else read it?

No. Your letter is produced confidentially, sealed, and addressed only to your sibling. The envelope is elegant and unbranded on the front, which matters in a joint family house where the post gets collected by whoever's nearest.
