The First Diwali After a Wedding Belongs to Two Houses at Once

The first Diwali after marriage is the one nobody warns you about: a new house learning your name, an old house missing you, and you somewhere in between feeling both. A letter is how you tell either house what it meant.

Why send a letter

Two houses, two letters

Write to the parents you left and to the family you joined. Both are waiting to hear which one you mean it to.

The first of a tradition

Whatever you do this first Diwali tends to become the thing you do every Diwali. Start with something worth repeating.

Says what the function cannot

The first festive season after a wedding is all guests and photographs. A letter is the quiet sentence underneath all of it.

To her parents, from a daughter
This is the first Diwali I'm not lighting the diyas on your balcony and I keep turning around expecting Maa to hand me the matchbox. The house here is warm and good and still learning my name. Thank you for twenty-six Diwalis of making it look easy. I'll be home soon.
To new in-laws
Thank you for making my first Diwali in this house feel like it was already mine - for the saree, for letting me do the rangoli my mother's way, for not making me a guest. I'm lucky, and I know it. Shubh Deepavali to you both.
To a partner, first Diwali married
Our first Diwali in our own house - crooked rangoli, one string of lights that doesn't work, and the best festival I've had. Everything after this is ours to build. Happy Diwali, my love.

Questions, answered

More answers on the FAQ page.

What to write to my parents on my first Diwali after marriage?

Say the thing you cannot say on the phone with everybody listening: that the new house is good AND that you are homesick, both at once. Parents of a newly married child are waiting to hear exactly that, and relieved to hear it honestly.

Will the letter reach before Diwali?

We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post - typically 3-6 days anywhere in India. Order about a week before the festival to be comfortable. Post volumes climb steeply in the fortnight before Diwali, so earlier is genuinely better for this one.

Should I write to my in-laws on my first Diwali in their house?

It lands very well and almost nobody does it. Name one specific thing they did to make you feel included rather than thanking them generally - the specific version is the one that gets kept.

Can I send two letters, one to each family?

Yes - place two separate orders with the two addresses. Many people do exactly this the first year. Handwritten is 699 each.

Can I write a Diwali letter to my husband or wife for our first festive season?

Yes, and the first one is worth writing down before the details blur - the half-working lights, the first time you did the puja in your own house, what surprised you about being married at a festival.

Can you send sweets or a gift along with the letter?

No - we produce and post letters, not parcels, so mithai and gifts travel separately. Most people send the box by courier and the letter through us, timed to land in the same few days. They arriving apart actually helps: the sweets are the custom, the letter is the part nobody expects.

Can the letter be in Hindi or Hinglish?

Yes - English, Hindi, or the Hinglish mix spoken at home. For in-laws especially, writing in the language of their house is itself part of the message.

I don't know what to write. Can you help?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before it is written out and posted - nothing goes in the envelope that doesn't sound like you.

Can I make it feel more festive?

Add a wax seal or scented paper, and up to 10 printed photos (50 each) - a photo of the family at last year's Diwali is the enclosure that gets the biggest reaction.

Find the letter that fits the person and the moment.
