This Diwali, Send Your Parents Something That Isn't a Forward
They will get forty Diwali messages and recognise thirty-nine of them as forwards. Send the one thing that could only have come from their own child - a letter, in your handwriting, that says what the phone call always runs out of time for.

Why send a letter
Not another forward
The same glowing-diya image reaches them from eleven people. A letter is the only Diwali message with one possible sender.
It gets read twice
Once when it arrives, and once aloud to whoever visits. Parents show letters from their children to everybody.
It survives the season
The sweets finish in a week and the lights come down. The letter is in a drawer next Diwali, and the one after.

Every Diwali I light the diyas here and think about the ones on your balcony railing - the way Papa insists on lighting the last one, the way the house smells of besan from the morning. I'll be home when I can. Until then this letter is sitting in my chair. Happy Diwali, Maa-Papa.
Mummy, Papa - every Diwali you made magical was you spending money you didn't say you were short of, and time you didn't say you were tired from. I understand that now. Thank you. Shubh Deepavali, with everything I have.
Happy Diwali, Maa-Papa. May this year be easy on you both. Keep some sweets aside for me and don't let Papa climb the ladder for the lights. I love you.

How do I send a Diwali letter to my parents in India?
Type or dictate what you want to say, pick handwritten (699) or printed (499), and give us their address. We write it on 100gsm cream paper and post it anywhere in India.
Will the letter reach before Diwali?
We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post - typically 3-6 days anywhere in India. Order about a week before the festival to be comfortable. Post volumes climb steeply in the fortnight before Diwali, so earlier is genuinely better for this one.
What should I write to my parents on Diwali?
Skip 'may this Diwali bring you prosperity'. Write one Diwali you remember from their house, one thing you only understood about them after moving out, and one honest sentence about missing them. That is the whole letter.
Can the letter be written in Hindi for my parents?
Yes - English, Hindi, or the Hinglish your family actually speaks. Many people write to their parents in Hindi because that is the voice their parents hear when they read it.
Can you send sweets or a gift along with the letter?
No - we produce and post letters, not parcels, so mithai and gifts travel separately. Most people send the box by courier and the letter through us, timed to land in the same few days. They arriving apart actually helps: the sweets are the custom, the letter is the part nobody expects.
Can I send photos of my own Diwali celebration to my parents?
Yes - enclose up to 10 printed photos, square 3x3 inches or 2.3x3.5 inches. Parents who only ever see your life on a phone screen react very differently to a print they can hold.
My parents live in a small town - can you deliver there?
Yes - we deliver anywhere in India. Give the fullest address you have plus a phone number for the courier, and order about a week ahead because festival-season post runs slower than usual.
I don't know what to write. Can you help?
Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before it is written out and posted - nothing goes in the envelope that doesn't sound like you.
Can I make it feel more festive?
Add a wax seal or scented paper, and up to 10 printed photos (50 each) - a photo of the family at last year's Diwali is the enclosure that gets the biggest reaction.
