🚉 Diwali · Away

No Leave, No Tickets, No Way Home. Send Something Anyway.

Sometimes the leave is refused, the tickets are gone, or the money has to go somewhere else this year. Nobody needs an explanation - they need to know they were thought about. A letter is the smallest thing that does that properly.

Diwali Letter When You Can't Come Home letter by post

Make it theirs

This is the name we write on the envelope. You can change it later.

Pick the date and we will tell you the last day to order.

We post within 48 hours, and delivery takes 3-7 working days. We never collect on a Sunday.

Why send a letter

Says the hard thing better

'I couldn't come' is awkward on a call and clean on paper. Writing lets you explain without anyone's voice cracking.

Arrives on the day

Scheduled delivery means something of yours is physically in that house on Diwali, even when you cannot be.

Costs less than a ticket

If the reason you're not coming is money, this is the version of being there that does not add to the problem.

When the leave was refused
I tried everything to get these days off and it didn't happen, and I'm more upset about it than I let on when we spoke. So I'm sending this instead - to be opened at the table, where I should be. Happy Diwali. Next year I'm booking the leave before they can say no.
When the year has been tight
This Diwali is a quiet one for me and I'd rather be honest than pretend. What hasn't changed is where I'd be if I could. You two are my favourite part of every festival. Happy Diwali - and don't worry about me, I'm alright.
Short, for someone who hates fuss
Couldn't make it. Hate that. Thinking of you all today more than usual. Happy Diwali - light one for me and I'll see you soon.

Questions, answered

More answers on the FAQ page.

What do I send home if I cannot come for Diwali?

Send something that physically arrives in the house on the day. A letter is 699 handwritten or 499 printed, and unlike a transfer or an online gift order it carries your actual words.

Will the letter reach before Diwali?

We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post - typically 3-6 days anywhere in India. Order about a week before the festival to be comfortable. Post volumes climb steeply in the fortnight before Diwali, so earlier is genuinely better for this one.

How do I tell my parents I am not coming home for Diwali?

Say it plainly, say you are sorry about it once rather than four times, and then spend the rest of the letter on them instead of on the explanation. The apology is the short part; being present is the long part.

Can the letter arrive exactly on Diwali?

Scheduled delivery lets you choose the day we POST it, with the likely arrival window shown beside it. For the festival itself, aim to have it land a day or two early - the house is busiest on the day itself.

Is a letter enough if I cannot send money or gifts this year?

For most families it is the part they would have chosen anyway. Gifts get acknowledged; a letter from a child who could not come home gets kept.

Can you send sweets or a gift along with the letter?

No - we produce and post letters, not parcels, so mithai and gifts travel separately. Most people send the box by courier and the letter through us, timed to land in the same few days. They arriving apart actually helps: the sweets are the custom, the letter is the part nobody expects.

Can I send one to my parents and one to my grandparents separately?

Yes - place two orders with the two addresses. Grandparents in particular tend to keep a letter addressed only to them rather than sharing one sent to the house.

I don't know what to write. Can you help?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before it is written out and posted - nothing goes in the envelope that doesn't sound like you.

Can I make it feel more festive?

Add a wax seal or scented paper, and up to 10 printed photos (50 each) - a photo of the family at last year's Diwali is the enclosure that gets the biggest reaction.

Find the letter that fits the person and the moment.
