🤝 Diwali · Friends

Your Friend Will Get Sixty Diwali Forwards. Be the One That Isn't.

Nobody has received post from a friend since school. That is exactly why it works - a Diwali letter to a friend is so far outside what anyone expects that it becomes the thing they tell other people about.

Diwali Letter to a Friend letter by post

Why send a letter

Completely unexpected

Friends exchange forwards at Diwali. One real letter in that pile is remembered for years, which is a very cheap way to be remembered.

It gets shown around

A letter from a friend is photographed and put on a story within the hour. Nobody does that with a forwarded greeting.

Reaches the friend who drifted

The friendship you have been meaning to pick up again - Diwali is the excuse, and a letter is the opener that a text cannot be.

To an old school friend
Happy Diwali, you idiot. I was thinking about the year we nearly set fire to your terrace and your mother banned us both from the anaars. Twenty years on and I still count that as a good evening. Hope this one is quieter for you. We're overdue a proper meeting.
To a friend you lost touch with
This is out of nowhere, I know. It's Diwali and your name came up in my head the way it does every year, and this time I thought I'd actually do something about it. I hope life is being decent to you. Write back if you feel like it - no pressure either way.
To a close friend in another city
Happy Diwali from one empty flat to another. We both said we'd go home this year and neither of us did, so consider this my long-distance attempt at a festival. Let's call properly this week. I mean it this time.

Questions, answered

More answers on the FAQ page.

Is it strange to send a friend a Diwali letter by post?

It is unusual, which is the whole value. Most people have not received post from a friend since school, and the surprise is a large part of why it lands.

Will the letter reach before Diwali?

We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post - typically 3-6 days anywhere in India. Order about a week before the festival to be comfortable. Post volumes climb steeply in the fortnight before Diwali, so earlier is genuinely better for this one.

What do I write in a Diwali letter to a friend?

Not greetings - a memory. Pick one specific thing the two of you did that nobody else would remember, then say the thing friends never say out loud about what the friendship has been worth.

Can I use a Diwali letter to reconnect with a friend I lost touch with?

It is one of the better reasons to send one. A letter is easier to receive than a sudden phone call because it asks nothing back - they can reply whenever, or not.

Can I send it to a hostel, PG or office address?

Yes - we deliver to hostels, PGs, offices and flats across India. Give the full address with room or floor details and a phone number for the courier.

Can a group of friends send one Diwali letter together?

Yes - send us the text and all the names to sign off with, and it arrives as one letter from the whole group. It reads better than a group chat and lasts considerably longer.

Can you send sweets or a gift along with the letter?

No - we produce and post letters, not parcels, so mithai and gifts travel separately. Most people send the box by courier and the letter through us, timed to land in the same few days. They arriving apart actually helps: the sweets are the custom, the letter is the part nobody expects.

I don't know what to write. Can you help?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before it is written out and posted - nothing goes in the envelope that doesn't sound like you.

Can I make it feel more festive?

Add a wax seal or scented paper, and up to 10 printed photos (50 each) - a photo of the family at last year's Diwali is the enclosure that gets the biggest reaction.

Find the letter that fits the person and the moment.
