You Can't Be at the Table. Send Something That Can.

The hardest part of Diwali away from home isn't missing the lights - it's knowing the house is full and your seat is empty. A letter arrives before you can, gets passed around the room, and does the one job a video call cannot: it stays.

Why send a letter

It takes your chair

Read out at the table, a letter puts you in the room in a way a propped-up phone screen never manages.

One letter, whole family

Address it to the house, not a person. Everyone from Dadi to the youngest cousin hears the same thing from you.

No network required

No bad signal, no 'hello, can you hear me', no three people shouting into one phone. Just your words, read properly.

To the whole house
To everyone at home - I know exactly what today looks like there: the rangoli half-finished, somebody shouting about the fuse, Dadi supervising from her chair. I am missing all of it and loving it from here. Happy Diwali. Save me one laddoo; I'm counting.
From a first year away
This is my first Diwali away from home and I have learnt that a city can be full of lights and still not look like our street. I'm fine, I promise - just homesick in the nicest way. Happy Diwali to all of you.
Honest about it
I could have written 'wishing you a prosperous Diwali' but you'd know I didn't mean it that way. What I mean is: I miss the noise, I miss the fighting over who lights what, and I'll be home as soon as I can. Shubh Deepavali.

Questions, answered

More answers on the FAQ page.

How do I send a Diwali letter home if I work in another city?

Order online from wherever you are and give us the home address - we post it anywhere in India. Handwritten is 699, printed 499, on 100gsm cream paper.

Will the letter reach before Diwali?

We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post - typically 3-6 days anywhere in India. Order about a week before the festival to be comfortable. Post volumes climb steeply in the fortnight before Diwali, so earlier is genuinely better for this one.

Can one letter be addressed to the whole family?

Yes - address it to the house or to 'the family' rather than one person. Letters written to everybody tend to get read aloud, which is the point.

What do I write to my family when I cannot come home for Diwali?

Be specific about what you are missing - the exact corner of the house, the argument that happens every year, the dish only one person makes. Naming it proves you are picturing them, which is what they want to know.

Can you send sweets or a gift along with the letter?

No - we produce and post letters, not parcels, so mithai and gifts travel separately. Most people send the box by courier and the letter through us, timed to land in the same few days. They arriving apart actually helps: the sweets are the custom, the letter is the part nobody expects.

Can the letter be read out loud at the family gathering?

Many people write it exactly for that. Schedule it to arrive a day or two before so it is in the house when everybody is, rather than landing after they have gone.

Can I write it in Hinglish the way we talk at home?

Yes - English, Hindi, or the Hinglish mix your family actually speaks. Writing it the way you talk is what makes them hear your voice off the page.

I don't know what to write. Can you help?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before it is written out and posted - nothing goes in the envelope that doesn't sound like you.

Can I make it feel more festive?

Add a wax seal or scented paper, and up to 10 printed photos (50 each) - a photo of the family at last year's Diwali is the enclosure that gets the biggest reaction.

Find the letter that fits the person and the moment.
