Nothing Happened. That's Exactly Why It's Hard.
Most friendships don't end — they lapse. There was no argument, no incident, nothing anyone did wrong. One of you got busy, then the other, and at some point too much time had passed for a casual message to feel casual. That's the trap: the longer the gap, the bigger the gesture has to be to clear it. A letter clears it. It's the one thing that can arrive after five silent years without demanding an explanation from either of you.

Why send a letter
It asks nothing of them
A call after five years puts them on the spot. A letter lets them read it, sit with it, and answer if and when they want to.
It carries its own weight
A message after a long silence looks accidental. A posted, handwritten letter is unmistakably deliberate — which is the reassurance they need.
No post-mortem required
You don't have to account for the years. 'I thought of you and didn't want to leave it' is a complete and sufficient letter.

I've started this message about six times over three years and deleted it every time, because I couldn't work out how to explain the gap. I've decided the gap doesn't need explaining. Nothing happened. We just got busy in different directions. I thought about you this week and I'd rather write than keep not writing.
I don't think either of us dropped it deliberately, but I know I stopped replying properly first, and I'm sorry for that. There's no crisis behind this letter — I just realised I'd let something good lapse out of pure inertia, and inertia is a stupid reason to lose a friend.
Hello from an unreasonable number of years ago. No emergency, nothing to respond to urgently. I saw something last week that only you would have found funny, had nobody to send it to, and decided the honest fix was to post you a letter. The thing, for the record, was a man arguing with a goat.

Questions, answered
What if they don't reply?
Then they've still had a good day because of you, and you've closed something that was sitting open. Write it so that it stands complete without a reply — no requests, no guilt, no 'you never called either'. Most people do reply, but the letter shouldn't be built on that.
Should I explain why I disappeared?
Only briefly, and only if it's true and simple. Long explanations turn a warm letter into a defence. One line — 'I got swallowed by work and handled it badly' — does more than a paragraph and leaves room for the part that matters.
Is it too late after ten years?
No. The letters that get the strongest reactions are almost always the ones sent after the longest gaps — because by then, nobody expects to be thought of at all. The risk of a letter landing awkwardly is far smaller than it feels from this side of it.
What's the difference between printed and handwritten?
Printed is your words set in a warm type on 100gsm cream paper. Handwritten is a real person writing your letter out by hand, in ink, on the same paper — slower, and the one people keep. For a friend you've had for years, handwritten is usually worth it.
Will it reach in time for Friendship Day?
Friendship Day falls on the first Sunday of August. We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post — typically 3–6 days anywhere in India — so order about a week ahead to be comfortable. If you've left it late, order anyway: a letter that lands a few days after is still the only one they'll get all year.
I'm not good with words. Can you help me write it?
Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before anything is printed or posted — nothing goes out that doesn't sound like you.
Who else sees what I write?
Nobody. Your letter is produced confidentially, sealed, and addressed only to your friend. The envelope is elegant and unbranded on the front, so it doesn't announce itself to whoever collects the post.
