You've Now Been Friends Far Longer Than You Were Classmates

School friendships have an odd shape: three or four intense years of seeing each other daily, then two decades of intermittent contact that somehow never breaks. The friendship you have now was built almost entirely after school ended — and it survived every reason it had to fade. That's the thing worth writing about, more than the school itself.

Letter to a School Friend letter by post

Why send a letter

A specific, shared world

The last bench, one particular teacher, the corridor. Detail like that can't be faked, and it's what makes the letter yours.

It outlasted its reason

You stopped having school in common years ago and stayed friends anyway. Say that — it's the actual compliment.

Better than the group chat

The batch group produces a hundred messages and no contact. One letter to one person is worth the entire thread.

The bench
We shared a bench for three years and have now been friends for eighteen, which means the school part is almost a rounding error. I think about that sometimes — that we had every excuse to drift and just didn't take it. Happy Friendship Day from your former partner in academic underachievement.
On the teacher
I heard our old class teacher retired. My first instinct was to tell you, before anyone else, which tells you exactly where you sit in my life twenty years on. Half of what I remember about being fifteen, I only remember because you were there for it.
Sincere
School was not a good time for me and you were most of the reason it was survivable. I don't think I've ever said that plainly — we were teenagers, and then we were adults with jokes to hide behind. So: thank you. It counted more than you knew.

Questions, answered

What do I write to a school friend I only see at reunions?

Skip the general nostalgia and pick one specific thing — a teacher, a bench, an afternoon. Then say the part reunions never allow time for: what their friendship actually did for you then, or does now. Specifics are what separate a letter from a batch-group message.

Should I send letters to the whole batch group?

Send one properly, to one person. Twelve identical letters read as a mailing; one letter that names a real shared afternoon is the one that gets photographed and shown around — which, in practice, reaches the batch group anyway.

Can I write it in Hindi or Hinglish?

Yes — English, Hindi or Hinglish. School friendships usually ran in a particular mix of languages, and a letter that uses that mix will sound far more like you than clean English would.

What's the difference between printed and handwritten?

Printed is your words set in a warm type on 100gsm cream paper. Handwritten is a real person writing your letter out by hand, in ink, on the same paper — slower, and the one people keep. For a friend you've had for years, handwritten is usually worth it.

Will it reach in time for Friendship Day?

Friendship Day falls on the first Sunday of August. We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post — typically 3–6 days anywhere in India — so order about a week ahead to be comfortable. If you've left it late, order anyway: a letter that lands a few days after is still the only one they'll get all year.

I'm not good with words. Can you help me write it?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before anything is printed or posted — nothing goes out that doesn't sound like you.

Who else sees what I write?

Nobody. Your letter is produced confidentially, sealed, and addressed only to your friend. The envelope is elegant and unbranded on the front, so it doesn't announce itself to whoever collects the post.

Find the letter that fits the person and the moment.

It takes five minutes…

…and they'll keep it for years.
