The Friendship That Started at 2am in a Hostel Room

College friends met you at the exact moment you were deciding who to be. There were bad decisions, worse food, and conversations at 2am that felt like the most important thinking either of you had ever done. Then everyone got jobs in different cities and it thinned out to birthdays. A letter is a way of saying that the thinning didn't reduce it — which is not something a group call is ever calm enough to carry.

Letter to a College Friend letter by post

Why send a letter

You built each other

Half of what you both think came out of those late conversations. Worth acknowledging once, in ink.

The cities pulled you apart

Different cities, different time zones, calendars that never line up. A letter doesn't need either of you to be free at the same time.

The details are absurd and precise

The canteen, the landlord, the 4am plan that nearly worked. Nobody else on earth would find those interesting. That's the point.

The 2am years
I've been in a lot of meetings since college where people discussed important things, and none of them have come close to the conversations we had at 2am on that awful floor, fuelled entirely by chai and unearned confidence. I've missed thinking out loud with you. That's most of what this letter is.
Different cities
Three cities and two time zones between us and we've reduced a whole friendship to birthday messages, which is a poor exchange rate. So here's a letter, which needs neither of us to be free at the same time. Tell me what you're actually doing — not the LinkedIn version.
Thank you
You talked me out of the worst decision of my early twenties and I don't think I've ever properly acknowledged it. You were right, you knew you were right, and you didn't hold it over me for more than four years. Genuinely: thank you.

Questions, answered

We only talk on birthdays now. Isn't a letter too much?

That gap is the reason to send it. A letter doesn't demand a reply the way a call does, and it says the thing the birthday message never has room for. Most people who send one tell us the friendship picked up properly within a week.

What do I write about after so many years apart?

One thing you remember precisely, one thing you're actually doing now, and one real question about their life. That structure beats a status update — it makes the letter a conversation rather than a summary.

Can I send it to their hostel or PG?

Yes — we deliver anywhere in India, including hostels and PGs, and we have a dedicated page for that. Add the room number and warden's block to the address line if there is one; that's what stops it sitting in a common pile.

What's the difference between printed and handwritten?

Printed is your words set in a warm type on 100gsm cream paper. Handwritten is a real person writing your letter out by hand, in ink, on the same paper — slower, and the one people keep. For a friend you've had for years, handwritten is usually worth it.

Will it reach in time for Friendship Day?

Friendship Day falls on the first Sunday of August. We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post — typically 3–6 days anywhere in India — so order about a week ahead to be comfortable. If you've left it late, order anyway: a letter that lands a few days after is still the only one they'll get all year.

I'm not good with words. Can you help me write it?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before anything is printed or posted — nothing goes out that doesn't sound like you.

Who else sees what I write?

Nobody. Your letter is produced confidentially, sealed, and addressed only to your friend. The envelope is elegant and unbranded on the front, so it doesn't announce itself to whoever collects the post.

Find the letter that fits the person and the moment.

It takes five minutes…

…and they'll keep it for years.
