🧭 Friendship · Long distance

Different Cities, Impossible Calendars, Same Friendship

Long-distance friendship dies of scheduling, not of feeling. Neither of you stopped caring — you just stopped catching each other at a time when both of you were free and awake and not exhausted, and after a year of that the contact thins to reactions on each other's posts. A letter is the one form of contact that doesn't need a shared slot in the calendar. You write when you can. They read when they can. Nothing has to line up.

Letter to a Long-Distance Friend letter by post

Why send a letter

No calendar required

The call you keep postponing needs both of you free. A letter needs neither. It waits at their door until they're ready.

It carries a place with it

A posted letter comes from somewhere — your city, your desk, your handwriting on a specific evening. A message comes from nowhere.

It restarts things

A letter almost always gets a real reply. It's the cheapest way to turn a fading friendship back into a live one.

The scheduling problem
We've been trying to schedule a call since March. I've given up and posted you a letter instead, which requires nothing from you except being at your own address. This is now your problem to reply to at your convenience, which I appreciate is a very passive-aggressive gift.
Describing where you are
It's raining here in a way that's been going on for three days and everyone has stopped commenting on it. I'm at the desk by the window, which you'd hate — no natural light after four. I'm telling you this because I've realised you have no picture of my daily life any more, and that seems like the thing distance actually takes.
Plainly
The distance hasn't changed anything on my side and I wanted to say so in a way that couldn't be lost in a chat. You're still the person I mentally narrate things to. Two cities is an inconvenience, not a demotion.

Questions, answered

How does a letter help a long-distance friendship?

It removes the scheduling problem, which is what actually kills these friendships. It also lands as an object in their real life rather than a notification in their phone — which is why it tends to restart proper contact instead of just adding to the backlog.

How long does delivery take within India?

We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post — typically 3–6 days anywhere in India. You'll be able to follow it, so you know roughly when it lands.

My friend is abroad, not in another Indian city.

We post within India. If your friend is overseas, the usual route is to write to family here who can carry it across — many people use our letters exactly that way when someone is travelling out.

What's the difference between printed and handwritten?

Printed is your words set in a warm type on 100gsm cream paper. Handwritten is a real person writing your letter out by hand, in ink, on the same paper — slower, and the one people keep. For a friend you've had for years, handwritten is usually worth it.

Will it reach in time for Friendship Day?

Friendship Day falls on the first Sunday of August. We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post — typically 3–6 days anywhere in India — so order about a week ahead to be comfortable. If you've left it late, order anyway: a letter that lands a few days after is still the only one they'll get all year.

I'm not good with words. Can you help me write it?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before anything is printed or posted — nothing goes out that doesn't sound like you.

Who else sees what I write?

Nobody. Your letter is produced confidentially, sealed, and addressed only to your friend. The envelope is elegant and unbranded on the front, so it doesn't announce itself to whoever collects the post.

Find the letter that fits the person and the moment.

It takes five minutes…

…and they'll keep it for years.
