🙏 Friendship · Thank you

They Showed Up. You Never Properly Said Thank You.

Somewhere in your life there's a friend who did something during a bad stretch — sat in a hospital corridor, took a call at 3am, turned up without being asked, or simply kept texting through months when you gave them nothing back. It got acknowledged at the time with something quick, and then life resumed. This is the letter that goes back and does it properly, months or years later, which is when it means the most.

Thank You Letter to a Friend letter by post

Why send a letter

Late thanks lands hardest

Thanking someone a year later proves you didn't just feel it in the moment — you carried it. That's a different message entirely.

Name the exact thing

'Thanks for everything' evaporates. 'You drove to the hospital at 2am and stayed till morning' is a sentence they'll reread.

They get to keep it

Spoken thanks disappears. A letter is proof, in your handwriting, that what they did mattered — kept in a drawer for years.

The hospital
You sat in that corridor with me for six hours and mostly said nothing, which was exactly right, and I have never told you what it meant. I was not in a state to say it then. I'm in a state to say it now: I don't know how I'd have got through that night alone, and I didn't have to, because of you.
The bad year
For most of last year I was terrible company and gave you almost nothing back — unanswered messages, cancelled plans, the lot. You kept turning up anyway, without ever making me feel like a project. That's a rare thing and I noticed every instance of it, even when I couldn't respond.
Small and specific
You probably don't remember dropping food off that week. You did it twice, said nothing about it either time, and left before I could make it awkward. It's one of the kindest things anyone has done for me and I've thought about it a lot since. Thank you.

Questions, answered

Is it strange to thank someone this long after?

It's better. Thanks offered in the moment can be reflex; thanks offered a year later proves it stayed with you. Say so directly — 'I couldn't say this properly at the time' explains the delay in one line and makes the delay part of the point.

What if they brush it off?

They almost certainly will, out loud — that's the standard Indian friend response to being thanked. It doesn't mean it didn't land. The letter goes in a drawer regardless, and that's where it does its work.

Should the whole letter be about the thank you?

Mostly, yes. Keep it to one page and one subject. Adding news and updates dilutes it — you can send those separately. A short letter with one clear purpose is far stronger than a long one that gets there eventually.

What's the difference between printed and handwritten?

Printed is your words set in a warm type on 100gsm cream paper. Handwritten is a real person writing your letter out by hand, in ink, on the same paper — slower, and the one people keep. For a friend you've had for years, handwritten is usually worth it.

Will it reach in time for Friendship Day?

Friendship Day falls on the first Sunday of August. We produce your letter within a day and send it by tracked post — typically 3–6 days anywhere in India — so order about a week ahead to be comfortable. If you've left it late, order anyway: a letter that lands a few days after is still the only one they'll get all year.

I'm not good with words. Can you help me write it?

Start from the samples on this page, or use our free writing assistant to shape a draft in your own voice. You approve every word before anything is printed or posted — nothing goes out that doesn't sound like you.

Who else sees what I write?

Nobody. Your letter is produced confidentially, sealed, and addressed only to your friend. The envelope is elegant and unbranded on the front, so it doesn't announce itself to whoever collects the post.

It takes five minutes…
